STUDENT INTERN - PLANNING DEPARTMENT - Internal / External

Brief Description

Sacramento Regional Transit District has received a grant from Caltrans for an internship opportunity in our Planning Department. This is a temporary internship with an expected work schedule of 16 hours per week. Continued enrollment while employed in the position is a requirement of the intern position. Under immediate supervision, the Student Intern will have a range of planning responsibilities including compiling statistical data, outreach, data analysis and validation, report preparation, conducting customer surveys and passenger counts.

  
Essential Functions

Specific tasks and responsibilities include but are not limited to verifying accuracy and completeness of incoming data from new contactless fare card system, assisting with development of analysis and reports for new contactless fare card system, testing Smart Card data against historical data, ticket and pass sales data, etc., incorporating Smart Card data into overall Fare Survey Report, assisting RT staff in collecting data on RT passenger fare payment, assisting RT staff with data entry and error checking and verifying adequate sampling, preparing Fare Survey Report, conducting back tests on APC data, cross-checking with other data sources and identifying problems and propose/test solutions. Miscellaneous support tasks include assisting with error-checking/quality control tasks related to RT’s on-board origin/destination survey, assisting with report preparation related to ridership and productivity, preparing handouts, fliers and other outreach material for service changes, coordinating special passenger surveys, attending meetings and public hearings and recording meeting minutes, conducting public surveys and answering questions from the public while working in the field and assisting with notifications of service changes.

  
Minimum Qualifications

Education: Must be currently enrolled as a junior or senior level undergraduate student or as a graduate student for the 2012/2013 school year, in an accredited four year college or university majoring in Computer Science, Geography, Sociology, Urban Land Development, Urban and Regional Planning, Urban Studies and Planning, City and Regional Planning, Public Policy and Administration, Community and Regional Development or other related program.

Experience: No previous work experience in the planning field is required.

Other Requirements: Knowledge of basic planning principles, statistical analysis, methods and techniques of tracking, recording, and presenting statistical data, English grammar, punctuation, spelling, and usage, modern office equipment. Must possess appropriate skill level in Word, Excel, Access, Power Point and specialized software related to responsibilities. Ability to perform research, analyze and summarize data, prepare reports, correspondence and related forms, learn District’s schedules and routes, prioritize and deal with conflicting workload requirements, learn District and departmental operating policies and procedures, apply customer service skills, representing the District in a positive way while working with the public, read, analyze, and interpret District policies, technical publications, and government regulations, communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, employees and the public.
