The Sacramento Regional Transit District (RT) is considering changes to the St. Rose of Lima Park (7th & K) light rail station and is seeking public participation.
Significant changes are underway in downtown Sacramento. In addition to the opening of the Golden 1 Center in October 2016, there are many new developments planned in the surrounding downtown core, which will result in increased pedestrian activity. The changes are a great opportunity for RT and the community as a whole, but the increase in foot traffic presents significant operational challenges for the St. Rose of Lima Park (7th & K) light rail station in its current configuration.
The light rail track at this location curves from K Street to 7th Street, with the station situated just south of the curve on 7th Street. In addition to the compressed feel created by the curve of the track, the trees, station furniture, and utility equipment further compact the pedestrian path. The sidewalk at the station also has a fairly steep grade/slope of up to six percent. During peak commute hours, the rear cars on the four- car Blue Line trains curve around the corner from 7th Street onto K Street, potentially blocking pedestrian flows and sight lines. Likewise, four-car Gold Line trains block K
Street when stopped at the station. Finally, the 700 K development will include retail and restaurant frontage on 7th Street within the station area, creating additional conflict.
Proposed alternatives are being discussed and the first includes renovating the current station and making operational changes during events to mitigate crowds. The second alternative suggests moving the station boarding area north of K Street, which would provide ample space but may conflict with development plans. The third option is to close the station permanently and direct passengers to the nearby 7th & Capitol Station. The fourth alternative is to close the station for major events only and direct passengers to the 7th & Capitol Station.
In order to ensure ample public input and dialogue surrounding the issue, RT staff will host an open house on Tuesday, November 17, 2015, from noon to 6 p.m. at the Tsakopoulos Library Galleria located at 828 I Street, Sacramento.
Anyone who is interested in participating, but is not able to attend the open house, can take the online survey posted at sacrt.com through Friday, November 20, 2015.
