SACRAMENTO, CA –The Kings season opener against the Houston Rockets is cause for celebration, and that’s why the Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) will offer a Free Ride Day to those attending the game on Wednesday, October 18. SacRT is encouraging people to leave their car behind and take light rail for more convenient and hassle free transportation to the arena. The free rides will primarily benefit regional riders traveling to the games.

Passengers traveling on SacRT’s Blue Line and Gold Line need only to present a valid Kings ticket in order to enjoy a free light rail ride for the season opening game. To make the trip even easier, SacRT customer assistance staff will be on-hand at several key light rail stations (Roseville Road, Franklin, Sunrise and Watt/Manlove) to help new riders navigate the light rail system.

“We are pleased and encouraged by the growing number of riders who are opting to take transit to the arena from all over the Sacramento region,” said Henry Li, SacRT General Manager/CEO. “With 43 miles of light rail linking 22 park-and-ride lots located throughout the north, south, and east Sacramento corridors, traveling by light rail has never been easier and our customers are giving us very positive feedback.“

Li expects ridership will continue to grow as word spreads about SacRT’s clean, safe and convenient light rail service. During last season, up to 11% of Golden 1 Center attendees successfully traveled by light rail.

Similar to last year, extended light rail service will be provided to passengers for up to 45 minutes after the end of the a Kings game and other major arena events.

Throughout the year, SacRT has provided Free Ride Days to honor several community events and celebrations with emphasis on students, seniors, veterans, and persons with disabilities. This is one way SacRT encourages new ridership with the goal of reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality that benefits everyone.

Although light rail is free on Wednesday, October 18, for game attendees, SacRT encourages riders to become familiar with the variety of fare payment options to make riding easy and convenient. Passengers should consider using Connect Card, the region’s new electronic fare smart card. The Connect Card can be obtained and loaded with cash value at most Raley’s and Bel Air markets.

Another easy pay option is SacRT’s new mobile app, ZipPass. Simply download ZipPass free from the App Store or Google Play. Purchase single ride tickets or daily passes, and activate them when ready to board buses and light rail trains.

For those using the light rail station fare vending machines, event attendees can purchase special “Event Round-Trip” fare for $5.50, or $2.70 for riders eligible for discount fare, with a single transaction.
