Planned Service Detours and Disruptions
  • Folsom Service Disruption Update - Wednesday, February 22, 2017
As you are aware, the process to get light rail service restored to the Historic Folsom and Iron Point stations has been unfortunately, very lengthy - It required much of the hardware to be custom built off site. One of the instrument cases is almost complete and will go through a series of static tests next week with installation expected the first weekend in March. Much like the start of new light rail line service, there will be a series of safety tests that follow the installation. Depending upon how the testing goes, RT will be able to resume regular light rail service on Monday, March 13, possibly sooner if all goes well.

We know this service disruption has severely impacted your commute and thank you for your patience during reconstruction.

  • Bus Detour on Route 51, Tuesday, February 7, 2017 to Friday, February 10, 2017
Broadway (both directions) between 19th Street and 20th Street will be closed from 6 a.m. on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 until 6 p.m. on Friday, February 10, 2017 for Union Pacific Rail Road to upgrade the grade crossing.

The bus stops on Broadway (eastbound) at 18th Street and 19th Street and on Broadway (westbound) at 19th Street and 21st Street will be temporarily closed.

Passengers connecting to or from the Blue Line will have to use the bus stops at Broadway and 17th Street.

  • Bus Stop 2928 (Fair Oaks Blvd on Route 28) Temporary Closure until early March
Bus Stop 2928 on Fair Oaks Blvd southbound, across from Monte Park will be closed for approximately 30 days due to construction work to widen Fair Oaks Blvd. This bus stop is served by Route 28. A temporary bus stop is located 150-feet to the north. Signs are in place to mark the temproary bus stop location.
  • Message Regarding Commute Time Trains
RT has received comments regarding short trains during commute hours. Unfortunately, RT has been struggling for some time now to meet our commute time peak vehicle requirement of 4-car trains (3-cars for VTA trains). A major part of our fleet, the Siemens light rail vehicles, reach the end of their 30-year useful life in March of this year. We realize that this causes crowding and while "standing room only" trips are common and considered normal during commute times for transit systems around the country, we certainly want to operate the design capacity of the system. A 30-year-old vehicle with several million miles of service, has more issues requiring maintenance and are less reliable overall. Staff is working diligently to repair and return vehicles to service as quickly as possible, but the real solution is to replace our aging fleet as they reach the end of their 30 year life. This will require a major financial commitment on the part of the community in order to fund light rail vehicle replacement and other state of good repair projects for RT's aging system. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience.

  • December 16, 2016 Update on Folsom light rail service
On December 12, a trucker transporting an over-sized load ran into one of RT's crossing gate mechanisms at the Natoma intersection at Folsom Boulevard in the City of Folsom. The gate mechanism came in contact with the overhead wire that the trains operate on, which in turn sent high voltage into RT's signal and grade crossing protection systems causing extensive damage. Some of the repair work will be done off site, but it may take up to two months to complete. We are exploring ways to get the work done as fast as possible.

We are operating a shuttle bus from the Historic Folsom Station to the Iron Point Station until repairs are completed, and updates about service changes will be posted as they occur. Because shuttle buses operate on surface streets, they are subject to traffic delays and the timing may be off when connecting passengers to light rail at Iron Point Station. Passengers may find it more convenient to park and ride from the Iron Point Station; or, Sunrise Station for more frequent light rail service.

As of Tuesday, December 20, 2016, in order for riders to better connect with light rail trains at the Iron Point Station, RT shuttle buses will depart the Historic Folsom Station at the following temporary times:

Monday - Friday: Every :15 and :45 of the hour, with the first trip at 4:45 a.m. and the last trip at 7:15 p.m.

Saturday: Every :15 and :45 of the hour, with the first trip at 7:15 a.m. and the last trip at 7:15 p.m.

Sunday: Every :15 and :45 of the hour, with the first trip at 9:45 a.m. and the last trip at 7:15 p.m.

Please note that the shuttle buses will arrive at the Glenn Station approximately five minutes later to pick up and drop off passengers.

    We apologize for the inconvenience.

  • A non-RT incident at Glenn Drive and Folsom Boulevard on Monday, December 12 caused major damage to the power structures at Natoma Crossing. RT will operate a bus bridge on the Gold Line from Historic Folsom to Iron Point stations until further notice.
Commuters traveling to downtown, and Golden 1 Center riders should park at Iron Point, Hazel or Sunrise Station for regular light rail service.
  • During major Golden 1 Center events, RT Routes 11, 15, 30, 38, 51, 62, 86 and 88 may have to detour based on traffic conditions and road closures with little or no notice.
  • Bus Stop 3179 on Howe Ave southbound at Marconi Ave on Route 87 will be closed until further notice due to construction
  • Rider Alert: 7th & K Station will permanently close effective (end of service day) on Friday, September 30, 2016.
  • RT Bus Service Disruptions
RT's bus service from time to time can be delayed by traffic congestion and other non-related RT events, with little or no notice, that may affect service. As part of a disruption, RT bus stops may be affected as well.
