Job Summary
Under general direction, provide technical and engineering supervision in the areas of project planning, design, and construction of systems, including train signaling, traction power and catenary, communications, vehicles, traffic signaling, and fare vending for the District’s light rail projects and other facility development projects; and perform other related duties as assigned.

Distinguishing Characteristics
This is a supervisory level classification with technical and administrative responsibilities that entail a good working knowledge of systems engineering principles, design development and construction procedures, and an understanding of state and federal procedures. An incumbent in this position works under minimal supervision and is expected to plan and complete complex engineering programs requiring the use of independent judgement and initiative in developing solutions to problems, interpreting general policies, and determining work assignments. It requires both internal and external contacts and coordination, including interface with representatives of city, county, and state agencies dealing with such matters as traffic signals, train signals, facilities, and track construction, right-of-way, and utilities from preliminary design through construction.
Essential Functions
Provide supervision over professional engineers. Plan and supervise all phases of engineering and design problems and other technical support to the Division and the District; provide preliminary engineering in support of environmental review process; and provide engineering support services required for the District’s capital program design and implementation.
Develop technical documents on facility design submittals; provide engineering estimates of design projects; develop and review technical reports, such as design concept definitions; provide important technical and general coordination/interface with professional/technical representatives of the city, county, state, and private organizations; and provide technical assistance in the development of design of bus and rail projects.

Minimum Qualifications — Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Required Prior Experience:
Four years of experience in the performance of professional engineering work, with experience in design, estimating, and contract administration, with an emphasis on design and construction of rail transit systems or public works facilities.
Required Prior Education:
Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering from an accredited college or university. Degree may be in a Mechanical, Industrial, Electrical, or other related Engineering Field, with relevant experience in systems work.
Special Requirements:
Licensed as a Professional Engineer in the state of California. Possession of a valid Class C California Operator’s License issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
