Assistant Civil Engineer
Pay Grade:   G13

Monthly Salary Range:   $4,300 - $5,489

Job Summary

This classification is primarily responsible for performing tasks in the following areas: Civil Engineering Design, and Project Oversight and Management. This is the entry-level classification in this series, and is typically the trainee level. Work mainly involves the review of information, including summarization, analysis, interpretation and re-presentation in a different format.

Supervision

Supervision Received: This class works under general supervision, wherein the assigned duties require the exercise of judgment or choice among pre-established actions, sometimes without clear precedents and with concern for the consequences of the action. The employee may or may not work in close proximity to his/her supervisor.

Essential Functions

A. Civil Engineering Design
Duties may include:
Review and comment on design plans and make sure corrections are made. Review and comment on technical specification according to standard specification and construction manual. Write specification sections if needed. Correct plans as needed.

B. Project Oversight and Management
Duties may include:
Visit job sites on regular basis to ensure construction is according to specifications. Support site design adjustments to facilitate construction process. Respond and find solutions for all construction difficulties. Review and approve various products and construction method submittals. Review and respond to utility letters from other government agencies. Review plans to look for any possible conflict with District facilities. Respond with letter to inform appropriate individuals of any conflict before discussing to find a solution. Interface with other engineers to resolve construction problems, plan problems, and drawing details. Interface with manufacturers to discuss product lines. Interface with contractors to smooth construction progress. Review plans to find out any potential impact with District facilities. Come up with solutions to protect District facilities. Propose solutions on plans before suggesting to approve permits.

Knowledge and Abilities

Required Knowledge of:

  • Civil engineering principles.

  • CalTrans, City, and County standard specifications and manual construction.

  • Various product lines and manufacturers.

  • Construction manual, safety rules, and regulations.

  • Experience with on site construction.

  • Standard specifications and construction manual.

  • Various lines of industrial products.


Required Ability to:
  • Produce drawings with limited information.

  • Learn District facilities.


Required Computer Skills with:
  • Common word processing software.

  • Common spreadsheet software.

  • ERMS software concepts.

  • Accounting or operations software functionality.

  • Email, contact management, and scheduling software.

Minimum QualificationsAny combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Required Prior Experience:
Two years of experience as a civil engineer.

Required Prior Education:
A Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. An EIT Certificate is desirable.
