Job Summary
This is the second-level position in the LR Mechanics’ classification. Performs maintenance, inspections, and component changeouts on Light Rail vehicles and fare vending/bill change equipment.

Essential Functions
Under general supervision, works on Light Rail vehicles to include removal and replacement of component parts such as, but not limited to, truck assemblies, motor alternators, car control units, train control units, brake control units, air conditioners, pantographs, traction motors, and gearboxes; respond to trouble calls associated with fare vending/bill change equipment and removes and replaces associated component parts; may be assigned to train and assist lower classifications or to assist higher classifications in the LRV Mechanics series; read and understand service manuals and follow written and oral instructions; performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Reads job orders and observes and listens to vehicles in operation to determine malfunction.
- Climbs up and down ladder.
- Lifts and carries equipment of up to 50 pounds.
- Stoops, kneels, crawls, smells.
- Specific vision abilities include close, distance, and peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Work environment has regular exposure to moving mechanical parts and intermittent exposure to loud noise and vibrations, exposure to toxic or caustic fumes and working in high, open places.
- Necessary aptitudes include finger and manual dexterity, initiative, precision, concentration, judgment, and problem solving.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Use of tools common to the trade.
- Electrical and mechanical systems of District LRV’s, vehicles, and equipment.
- First aid and safety practices.
Ability to:
- Learn the District’s policies and procedures.
- Demonstrate the correct use of standard hand tools.
- Operate District equipment and vehicles.
- Read and understand schematics.
- Operations, service and safety manuals.
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Exercise good judgment and solve practical problems.
- Maintain qualifications to perform duties efficiently and in compliance with all safety rules and regulations with or without supervision.
Minimum Qualifications — Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Prior Experience:
Must have held the position of Light Rail Mechanic C for a minimum of twelve (12) months or possess an equivalent amount of practical skill and dexterity.
Prior Education:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Special Requirements:
Must possess a Class A California Driver’s License issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles with endorsement(s); must be able to pass and maintain Regional Transit’s examination for LRV Operator’s license including Ishihara Eye Test; must have or obtain tools on Light Rail Mechanic B’s tool list by the end of the probationary period.
