Job Summary
Assists with inspections, testing, routine maintenance, and repairs on the District’s light rail traction power substations and electrical distribution system in a training capacity; performs a variety of manual labor in the performance of assigned duties and in support of designated work crew’s activities; participates in organizing and maintaining an inventory of parts, tools and equipment in the workshop; practices safe work processes and contributes to the maintenance of a safe working environment for self and others; and performs related duties as assigned.

New employees receive close supervision within a framework of well-defined policies and procedures. Once proficiency is attained, assignments become more varied and are performed under general supervision within a framework of well-defined policies and procedures.

Incumbents in this classification do not exercise supervision over others.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the entry-level classification in the Lineworker job series. The Lineworker I classification differs from the Lineworker II and III classifications in that the former performs more routine tasks under close supervision.
Essential Functions
Assists other Lineworker classifications in performing inspections, testing, diagnostic analyses and maintenance of the light rail traction power substations, electrical distribution system, operations signal system, traffic warning devices, crossing gates, power switch and electric lock mechanisms; receives and stocks inventory of parts and equipment in workshop; maintains cleanliness of the workshop and organizes tools and equipment; performs routine preventative maintenance to substation air conditioning units; performs duties as a switch or flagperson for the protection of the public, employees and trains during emergencies and rerouting of trains; operates a variety of non-revenue District vehicles including construction and heavy equipment vehicles; and performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Demands
The essential functions of this job are performed primarily outside in various weather conditions, potentially exposing incumbents to extreme heat and cold. Work is frequently performed around high voltage electrical energy, on ladders and scaffolding at elevated heights, and around equipment and machinery with moving parts. Incumbents are regularly exposed to toxic and/or caustic solvents and chemicals, heavy dust, grease and intermittent moderate to loud noise. Job duties require working non-traditional and/or odd hours, including holidays and incumbents may be called in to work at any time during emergencies.
Essential duties of this job require incumbents to have a high degree of concentration; to sit and use leg/foot to reach or handle controls; to climb stairs and ladders and work at elevated heights; to stoop, stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms to grasp, handle or feel objects or controls; to bend and twist at the waist; to hear and talk to give and receive instruction and other information; to maintain body equilibrium; to possess depth perception and peripheral vision; to view objects within one to twenty feet, adjust focus, and distinguish between basic colors and shades of color; to push, and/or pull weight up to 75 pounds, or carry weight up to 50 pounds; and to use both hands and feet to operate vehicles and equipment.
Knowledge and Abilities
Required Knowledge of:
- Basic operating principles of electrical or electronic circuitry.
- Care and use of hand tools and equipment used in general electrical or mechanical maintenance work.
- Safe work practices relative to working with electricity.
- Basic mathematics.
- Basic first aid and safety practices.
Required Ability to:
- Comply with drug and alcohol testing provisions for safety-sensitive employees as required by the FTA, Department of Transportation (49 CFR, Parts 40 and 655).
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions.
- Learn and apply the District’s policies and procedures.
- Work safely in high places.
- Perform tasks in compliance with all safety rules and regulations.
- Communicate verbally and in writing.
- Safely operate District non-revenue vehicles and construction and/or heavy equipment.
- Pass Light Rail Vehicle Rule Book examination.
- Pass and maintain Regional Transit’s High Rail Operator’s License.
- Calculate basic mathematics in an accurate manner.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the performance of required duties.
- Perform essential functions of the job without causing harm to self or others.
Required Computer Skills with:
- Basic literacy in the use of personal computers and Windows applications.
- Ability to learn and effectively use the District’s email system.
- Ability to learn to use network I/O devices and PLC systems.
- Ability to read and understand computer readouts and diagnostics accurately.
Minimum Qualifications — Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Required Prior Education:
Graduation from high school or equivalent and successful completion of DC and AC Theory and Circuit Fundamentals coursework from an accredited post secondary educational institution. (5 units total)
Required Prior Experience:
Either one year of full-time work experience successfully performing in any IBEW Bargaining Unit position, or one year of full time work experience in an entry or apprentice position, successfully performing basic electrical, electronic and or electro/mechanical repairs and maintenance.
Special Requirements, Licenses and/or Certificates:
Possession of a valid Class C Driver’s License; the ability to obtain a Class A Instructional Permit with air brake endorsement prior to the start of employment; a satisfactory driving record; the ability to pass Ishihara Eye Test; required to obtain the tools for the Lineworker I by the end of the probationary period.
