Job Summary
Under general supervision, employees in this position perform complex technical work involved in the preparation and maintenance of District payroll records and reports.

Essential Functions
Duties may include but are not limited to the following: maintain payroll records, registers and reports to document the details of payroll records. Adjust and reconcile complex invoices against payroll records. Process documents related to Operator Time Keeping. Review all payroll entries to ensure accuracy of payroll and conformity with contract provisions. Compile payroll data and record entries to payroll records. Input time sheet and payroll data using computer. Perform detailed audits of individual records as well as general audits of transactions. Investigate discrepancies and inconsistencies by researching supporting documents and payroll records.
Other Job Functions: Respond to verbal and written inquiries regarding payroll records and reports. Assist with implementation and maintenance of automated payroll systems. Operate standard office machines and equipment, such as 10-key, computer, printer, copier, etc. Distribute written materials, reports, and related payroll documents. Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of:
- Basic mathematics including variable and formula calculations.
- Principles, practices and methods of payroll record keeping.
- Applicable laws and procedures.
- Record keeping practices.
- Computer keyboard.
Ability to:
- Use a 10-key with speed and accuracy.
- Enter and retrieve data from automated payroll systems.
- Identify and correct errors in a variety of mathematical computations.
- Communicate verbally with District personnel and public agencies in English and in a professional manner.
- Explain, clarify, and apply payroll procedures.
- Use good judgement in making difficult and complex decisions.
- Understand and follow complex oral and written instructions.
- Proofread numerical data to insure accuracy of payroll and related documents.
- Read English at a level necessary to process payroll.
- Work independently and carry out assignments in the absence of specific instructions.
Minimum Qualifications — Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
High School Graduate or equivalent. Two years of professional payroll record keeping work experience. (One year of District payroll related work experience may be substituted for up to one year of the required experience);
or
Fifteen (15) semester units of completed college level accounting and/or bookkeeping related course work can be substituted for each six months of work experience.
