Job Summary
Operates District coaches over fixed routes to transport passengers in a safe and courteous manner, collects fares and provides information to passengers.

Essential Functions
Under general supervision, is expected to provide safe, efficient, and courteous fixed route transit service.
On a daily basis, operates District coaches over fixed routes in accordance with the designed schedule; performs visual vehicle inspections and reports any mechanical problems or defects of assigned coach prior to departure; picks up and discharges passengers at designated bus stops; collects fares and transfers, issues transfers inspect passes for validity; provides information to passengers regarding District’s transit system; operates wheelchair lift when necessary, and secures passengers’ wheelchairs to restraining devices to stabilize wheelchairs during trip; operates 2-way radio to communicate with radio control to report accidents, emergencies, schedule delays, equipment failure or unusual circumstances; completes written reports on accidents, or other unusual incidents in an accurate and timely manner; maintains order on the coaches.
Other Job Functions: On a periodic basis collects data and completes survey forms as required by the District; may assist with training of new operators; occasionally may follow oral instructions from the Dispatcher to perform basic vehicle troubleshooting.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
This position requires working odd hours, split-shifts on various days of the week, including holidays. Work is primarily performed outside. While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent must:
- Regularly hear, sit, reach with hands and arms, and use leg/foot to reach or handle controls.
- Exert physical effort, finger and manual dexterity are regularly needed to drive non-power steering vehicles and to operate door and dispense transfers.
- Frequently talk, walk, and use hands to handle or feel objects or controls.
- Occasionally required to stoop, lift up to 25 pounds, push or pull, and climb stairs.
- Have specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Regularly be exposed to fumes, odors, and moderate noise.
- Have a high degree of maturity, courtesy, memory, and concentration is needed.
Knowledge and Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Traffic laws, ordinances, rules and driving courtesies involved in transit bus operations.
- Principles and practices of public relations.
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience, and courtesy.
- Safe driving practices.
Ability to:
- Learn the District’s policies, and procedures.
- Read, write and make basic arithmetic calculations.
- Work unusual hours.
- Communicate with the public effectively.
- Obtain and maintain a valid Class B California driver’s license with passenger and air brake endorsements issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
- Exercise good judgment and problem-solving skills.
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions spoken or written in English.
- Operate coaches punctually, safely and efficiently.
- Learn the District’s transit routes and schedules.
- Maintain a friendly, effective, and courteous work relationship with the public, the passengers, and fellow employees.
Minimum Qualifications — Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Graduation from high school or equivalent; three (3) years of verifiable driving experience and one (1) year of experience dealing with the general public.
Special Requirements:
Must have a good driving record; possession of a valid Class C California Driver’s License issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles; must be 21 years of age; must have a verifiable past work history and pass a background investigation and a medical and drug screen examination.
