Job Summary
To perform entry level professional transportation engineering duties in connection with the planning, design, construction and maintenance of transportation systems and other transportation projects.

Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the entry-level professional engineer classification. Incumbents perform less complex office and engineering work under direct supervision in preparation for advancement to the journey level of Assistant Engineer. Assignments are generally routine or closely related within the framework of established procedures.
Essential Functions
Depending on the assignment and engineering discipline, incumbent will research products and processes; prepare plans and calculate quantities and cost estimates for various engineering projects including budgets; learn to use computer aided drafting and design programs; learn the operational principles of a working light rail system; perform routine engineering calculations; review plans, specifications and estimates developed by consultants; perform plan checks to ensure contractor compliance with RT specifications; assist in the performance of field inspections of various engineering projects; perform field survey work; analyze material and design data submitted to RT; check and analyze Environmental Impact Reports; assist in responding to citizen complaints regarding engineering problems; perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities
Required Knowledge of:
- Principles of engineering design as related to transportation systems and projects.
- Engineering mathematics and its application to engineering problems.
- Stress analysis, mechanics and properties of materials.
- An entry level of construction methods and equipment.
- Inspection needed to review so work.
- A basic understanding of real property descriptions.
- Engineering drafting and mapping principles.
- Computer systems and software programs to sufficiently operate a PC.
Required Ability to:
- Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Perform professional engineering work of minor complexity in the planning and design of transportation projects and in special engineering studies and review.
- Prepare neat and accurate maps, drawings, notes and reports.
- Do engineering calculations with increasing complexity.
- Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with fellow employees and outside agencies in the course of engineering work.
Minimum Qualifications — Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Required Prior Experience:
Highly desirable in the area of interest, but not necessary.
Required Prior Education:
A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university with a major in the Engineering discipline in the area of desired assignment.
Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid Class C California Operator’s License issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles.
