Director of Scheduling
Pay Grade:   MC21

Job Summary

This classification is primarily responsible for performing tasks in the following areas: Produce schedules and work assignments; Oversee and participate in schedules and route preparation; Supervisory Administrative; Communication and Information Dissemination; Project Oversight and Management; Public Information Services; Field Work. Work mainly involves problem solving and mediating highly conflicting, unexpected, and unusual problems involving multiple groups.

Supervision

Supervision Received: This class works under administrative direction, which includes broad management responsibility for a large program or set of related functions. Work is usually received in terms of goals; review is received in terms of results.

Supervision Exercised: This class may provide direct and/or indirect supervision to lower level personnel.

Essential Functions

A. Produce Schedules and Work Assignments
Duties may include:
Produce efficient runcuts based on the number of vehicles, operators, hours, and miles constraints. Use computer-based scheduling/runcutting software. Make recommendations for work rule changes, as necessary during contract negotiations. Other duties as assigned.

B. Supervisory Administrative
Duties may include:
Train schedulers in vehicle blocking and runcutting. Delegate, guide, direct, and motivate subordinates. Resolve conflicts and negotiate with others. Organize, plan, and prioritize work. Make personnel decisions such as interviewing, selecting, hiring, promoting, and disciplining employees. Work with Employee Relations to make recommendations for work rule changes, as necessary during contract negotiations. Other duties as assigned.

C. Oversee and Participate in Schedules and Route Preparation
Duties may include:
Work with Transportation to prepare operator runs that makes the most efficient use of personnel. Balance operator availability to the extent possible under the union contract and work rules. Work with Planning personnel throughout the service planning and implementation of new services to make sure the planned routes and service can be operated efficiently. Assist the Service Planning staff in developing service cost proposals. Monitor service implementation. Other duties as assigned.

D. Communication and information Dissemination
Duties may include:
Work with Public Information/Marketing in issuing schedule information used in public timetables. Communicate with the District's Transportation and Customer Relations Departments regarding the District's service schedules. Other duties as assigned.

E. Project Oversight and Management
Duties may include:
Coordinating the work and activities of others. Speaking to others to convey information effectively. Organize, plan, and prioritize work. Monitor/assess performance of individuals to make improvements or take corrective action. Attend project related meetings with other District Departments and external agencies. Other duties as assigned.

F. Public Information Services
Duties may include:
Respond to public questions regarding the District's transit schedules. Participate in transit service change implementation events. Other duties as assigned.

G. Field Work
Duties may include:
Field visits to evaluate on-time performance of the transit system schedules and passenger loads. Other duties as assigned.

Minimum QualificationsAny combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Required Prior Experience:
Seven years of experience managing and supervising staff engaged in professional, analytical transit scheduling work.

Required Prior Education:
A Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Mathematics, Statistics, or closely related field. Six years professional transit scheduling experience may substitute for the required education.
