Job Summary

This classification is primarily responsible for performing many of the tasks in the following areas: Transit and Other Related Plan Drafting, Analyzing, and Reporting, Surveying, and Information Tracking and Recording. This is the journey, fully trained level within this series; incumbents are expected to be fully competent to independently perform the full range of duties. Work mainly involves performing prescribed tasks in a somewhat predictable order. Exceptions are regular but are carried out according to pre-determined policies or procedures.

Supervision

Supervision Received: This class works under general supervision, wherein the assigned duties require the exercise of judgment or choice among pre-established actions, sometimes without clear precedents and with concern for the consequences of the action. The employee may or may not work in close proximity to his/her supervisor.

Supervision Exercised: This class may provide indirect supervision to lower level personnel.

Essential Functions

A. Transit and Other Related Plan Drafting, Analyzing, and Reporting
Duties may include:
Prepare complex civil, architectural, electrical, and mechanical drawings. Create new AutoCAD drawings and/or modify existing electronic or hardcopy drawings per departmental instructions to be reviewed by District engineers or architects for the purpose of new construction. Assist civil, electrical engineers, and architects in mathematical calculations to produce accurately designed and detailed drawings via AutoCAD for the purpose of new construction. Incorporate properly pathed electronic external reference drawings, digital image files, object linking, and embedding of Excel spreadsheets into AutoCAD drawing files. Plot and print on various media an accurate representation of all exhibit and construction drawings. Provide fundamental AutoCAD software support for all engineers and engineering technicians. Load and configure AutoCAD software and configure plotters, printers, and related software. Maintain and archive up-to-date electronic and hardcopy drawings created by the District's Civil and Track department and its consultants. Create, modify, maintain, and police CADD drafting standards to be used by the District's Civil and Track Department and its consultants. Prepare presentation graphics from verbal instruction or markups. Cut and mount graphics for presentations. Participate in field projects such as location and identification of items within the right of way. Take photos and measurements to determine encroachment or interference. Other duties as assigned.

B. Surveying
Duties may include:
Take survey measurements and verify object locations in proposed construction fields. Use software to identify location, ownership, and dimensions of properties within Sacramento County. Transcribe into the AutoCAD software survey information to be used in construction drawings. Other duties as assigned.

C. Information Tracking and Recording
Duties may include:
Create and maintain folder and files for different projects. Create database for location of drawings or documents. Copy files from CDs, floppy disks, emails or FTP sites. Maintain backup of all incoming drawing files. Produce hardcopy information for departmental distribution (e.g., schedules, drawing information). Take departmental meeting notes to be considered in construction drawings. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

Required Knowledge of:

  • Civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering and architectural design drafting practices.

  • Drafting terminology and application of reproduction techniques.

  • Math through trigonometry.

  • Different image and drawing formats.

  • Graphic-type software, including setup.

  • Computers, printers, and plotters in reproducing graphics.

  • Acceptable graphic layout.

  • Different methods of field measurement to determine exact location.

  • Basic surveying equipment use and procedures.

  • Electronic document control (e.g., create, delete, storage and retrieval, archive to CD, object and hyperlinking).

  • Relationships between various engineering disciplines.

  • Print reproduction from electronic files, microfiche, and hardcopy via plotter, printer, blueprint machine, copier, and scanner.

  • PUC guidelines, layout, and standards (MUTCD).

  • Legal description format.

  • Railway and LRT track safety.

  • APN books and numbers.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.


Required Ability to:
  • Coordinate and plan work in a fast paced, constantly changing environment.

  • Locate and retrieve drawings and documents in electronic and manual systems.

  • Set up and maintain drafting standards.

  • Extract, plot, and file drawing files produced by consultants.

  • Maintain overall consistent drafting standards.

  • Establish good quality assurance practices.

  • Print and plot from different operating systems within the department and maintain consistency and accuracy.

  • Provide AutoCAD support.

  • Interpret and plot utility information.

  • Interpret and understand Engineer's notes and comments.

  • Keep up with the latest drafting software updates.


Required Computer Skills with:
  • Common word processing software.

Minimum QualificationsAny combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Required Prior Experience:
Two years of civil and/or electrical engineering experience using CADD (Computer Aided Design and Drafting) and graphics programs effectively. Experience in field survey work is preferred.

Required Prior Education:
An Associate of Arts Degree in Engineering or Construction Technology or related field may substitute for one year of required experience.
