Job Summary

This classification is primarily responsible for performing advanced technical tasks in several of the following areas: Installation and Maintenance of Software Packages; Installation and Maintenance of Hardware and Peripheral Components; I.T. Help Desk; AS400 Support; Web Development. This is the journey, fully trained level within this series; incumbents are expected to be fully competent to independently perform the full range of duties. Work mainly involves the gathering and interpretation of data dealing with problems and difficult situations. Incumbents may put forth alternative solutions for consideration.

This class works under direction, wherein the employee receives general instructions regarding the scope and approach to projects or assignments, but procedures and techniques are left to the discretion of the employee.

Essential Functions

A. Installation and Maintenance of Software Packages.
Duties may include:
Oversee the installation of operating systems and applications. Provide instruction to users of software. Conduct analysis on software, operating systems and applications, and determine appropriate upgrades to existing software, operating systems and applications. Liaison with software vendors. Provide technical expertise in the operation and application of District standard personal computer software. Evaluate and test various software. Other duties as assigned.

B. Installation and Maintenance of Hardware/Peripheral Components.
Duties may include:
Oversee the setup, installation, and maintenance of CPU's. Install internal components such as hard drives, floppy drives, NIC's, modems, CD/DVDROM/ R/RW, and sound cards. Perform or provide direction in the upgrade of existing computer equipment. Provide technical expertise in the operation of District standard computer hardware. Other duties as assigned.

C. I.T. Help Desk.
Duties may include:
Resolve complex computer problems. Add, remove, update, and maintain information on work stations or users. Assign work orders to proper individuals when they are submitted. RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) of defective or incorrect hardware/software to vendors. Other duties as assigned.

D. AS400 Support
Duties may include:
Direct the installation or provide technical assistance for the installation of the configuration and the maintenance of hardware and peripheral equipment associated with the AS400, such as tape drives, DASD, printers, winax cables, etc. Monitor the weekly performance of system backup to tapes. Print and distribute reports. Other duties as assigned.

E. Web Development
Duties may include:
Design web pages using content provided by various departments. Design e-learning materials that will function in a variety of learning environments. Design and implement creative innovative solutions to deliver complex web-based applications. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

Required Knowledge of:
Computer software methodology and data analysis.
Techniques and procedures of software and network support for multiple users.
Installation, configuration, and troubleshooting processes for operating systems (DOS, Windows 98/2000, NOS: Novell).
Office Suites (Microsoft and WordPerfect), Email (GroupWise), Inter/Intranet.
Principles practices and techniques of customer service.
Systematic approach to problem solving.
Time management and organizational skills.
Advanced computer hardware installation, configuration, and troubleshooting processes.
Research methodology and data analysis techniques.
Networking and accessory equipment support for multiple users.
Advanced computer hardware/software installation on mainframes system.
Advanced computer flowchart configuration on mainframe systems.
FrontPage 2000 to write either raw HTML code or ASP script.

Required Ability to:

Follow written IT Help Desk procedures.
Maintain working knowledge of a wide variety of commonly used hardware.
Provide instruction to users of hardware.

Install, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain all of the software applications used by the District.
Communicate technical information to non-technical users.

Work effectively in a diversified team, guiding and supporting team members.
Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with employees, co-workers, managers, and vendors.
Handle multiple and parallel projects.
Install, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain all of the hardware and peripheral equipment used by the District.
Prioritize work orders and be flexible when emergencies occur.
Conduct research (via phone or internet) to obtain undocumented solution(s) for difficult hardware/software problems.
Design website structures and navigation systems that will fit District purposes.
Utilize and document HTML tricks such as browsers workarounds, develop undocumented code snippets, etc.
Ensure that applications and procedures function correctly on a range of browsers
Work in a "team environment" that advises department staff on the best practice and development in new web applications.
Keep apprised of latest methods and skills for an evolving web environment.

Minimum QualificationsAny combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Required Prior Experience
Three years of advanced technical work experience in an IT department at the professional level.

Required Prior Education
A bachelor of science degree from an accredited college or university in computer science or closely related field. An additional six years of qualifying experience may substitute for the required education.
