Route Check Supervisor
Pay Grade:   G08

Job Summary

This classification is primarily responsible for performing tasks in the following areas: Supervisory Administration; Dispatch Assignments; Information Tracking and Recording; Payroll. Work mainly involves having primary responsibility for full-time supervision of staff including hiring/firing, corrective action, and completing and conducting performance evaluations.

Supervision

Supervision Received: This class works under direction, receiving general instructions regarding the scope and approach to projects or assignments, but procedures and techniques are left to the discretion of the employee.

Supervision Exercised: This class provides direct and/or indirect supervision to lower level personnel.

Essential Functions

A. Supervisory Administration
Duties may include:
Assist in the selection and hiring process. Train route checkers who are performing data collection duties on bus, light rail vehicles, and streets. Interact frequently with route checkers for detail clarification of work assignments. Prepare memo responses to requests for incidental time off. Conduct occasional field supervision. Administer performance reviews. Enforce departmental policies/procedures including counseling on performance, behavior, and corrective action. Handle changes to route checker schedules. Other duties as assigned.

B. Dispatch Assignments
Duties may include:
Create and prepare work assignments for subordinates. Prepare material for route checkers to collect data on bus, light rail, and various other surveys. Other duties as assigned.

C. Information Tracking and Recording
Duties may include:
Review and verify that all scheduled assignments are actually worked and reconcile with supervisor's daily schedule. Review and verify that all material or data collected is complete and accurate. Reassign assignments not worked. Assist in developing survey strategies for the collection of ridership information. Organize hard copy files. Assist with data entry. Other duties as assigned.

D. Payroll Support
Duties may include:
Verify time keeping records to calculate and record route checker pay. Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge and Abilities

Required Knowledge of:

  • Methods and techniques of conducting surveys.

  • Principles of supervision and training.

  • Bus and light rail operating schedules.

  • Service scheduling and run-cutting principles.

  • Transit operations, services, vehicles and fare structure.


Required Ability to:
  • Plan route checker assignments and schedules.

  • Coordinate work schedules of the route checkers with bus and light rail operations.

  • Interact with various departments within the agency to perform duties.

  • Apply independent judgment and initiative in developing solutions to problems.

  • Prepare responses to individual route checker requests.

  • Communicate information in a manner that is clear, concise, and effective.

  • Read and interpret street maps.

  • Obtain knowledge of transit operations, services, vehicles, and fare structure.

  • Coordinate the collection of ridership data for Federal Transportation Authority (NTD) compliance.

  • Coordinate specific route/segment ridership, running time surveys, and various special survey requests.

  • Organize and maintain data and surveys.


Required Computer Skills with:
  • Common word processing software.

  • Common spreadsheet software.

  • Common database applications.

  • ERMS software concepts.

  • Accounting or operations software functionality.

  • Email, contact management, and scheduling software.

  • Presentation software.

Minimum QualificationsAny combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

Required Prior Experience:
Three years of increasingly responsible administrative, supervisory, and/or transit scheduling experience.

Required Prior Education:
An Associate’s Degree or equivalent. An additional three years of qualifying experience may substitute for the required education.
