Job Summary
Under general direction, this position provides a wide range of complex and advanced drafting services and other sub-professional engineering tasks.

Distinguishing Characteristics
This is an advanced journey level classification in the Engineering Technician series. It is distinguished from the other classifications within the Engineering Technician series by the performance of the most complex assignments.
Essential Functions
Perform complex and advanced drafting work both by hand and with a computer, such as plans, profiles, cross-sections and details; assist with a variety of field projects; gather field data; field measuring of quantities; assist in project coordination; assist in field surveys; perform complex calculations; file and catalog project plans; produce graphics for public presentations; perform the most complex and advanced drafting tasks and assist supervisor with assigning, coordinating, and checking work of other Engineering Technicians; be able to drive a vehicle in the performance of duties; and perform other duties as assigned.
Job Demands
Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Work is performed both indoors and outdoors with exposure to year round weather patterns.
- Physical effort is needed to lift and carry various survey equipment and/or paper rolls, up to fifteen pounds.
- Basic communication skills, such as talking, seeing, and hearing are needed.
- Finger dexterity is needed for sufficient use of computer and mouse.
- Necessary aptitudes include understanding instructions, verbal and numeric aptitudes and perception of detail in complex graphic materials, analytic ability, precision, concentration, and judgment.
Knowledge and Abilities
Required Knowledge of:
- Standard advanced drafting terminology, abbreviations, symbols, dimensioning techniques and acceptable graphic layouts, e.g., lettering styles and size, orientation, borders, title blocks, etc.
- Preliminary and final engineering drawing requirements, including preparation of maps, working drawings, and plans and profiles.
- Principles of advanced drafting layout and design.
- Mechanics of advanced drafting.
- Types and appropriate applications of drafting tools.
- Drafting terminology.
- Reproduction techniques.
Required Ability to:
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Work from verbal instructions, sketches, or notes in producing engineering documents.
- Work with small computers in the production of various graphics products.
- Coordinate and plan work activities in a rapidly changing environment.
- Assist District personnel in design and layout of printed materials.
- Prepare and amend right-of-way maps, working drawings, and plans and profiles.
- Prepare as-built drawings.
- Recommend minor design changes or clarifications.
- Maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of work.
Minimum Qualifications — Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Required Prior Experience:
Four years of civil and/or electrical drafting experience using CADD (Computer Aided Design and Drafting) and graphics computer programs effectively. Experience in field survey work is preferred.
Required Prior Education:
Graduation or equivalent from an accredited high school.
Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid California Class C Motor Vehicle Operator’s License issued by the California State Department of Motor Vehicles.
